Continuing on with a european theme from last month’s Italian ride courtesy of Dhanush Ghorbanali, we find ourselves in Belgium. Home of the most excellent beer, friendly people and not forgetting some amazing rides. Chimay/Ebi and Freddy Files both rank super highly on our VW calendar radar, so it only seems fitting that we call in to Bocholt to get the some insider info and great pics from Nils Tielen’s excellent 1973 beetle.

Ok, I’m from Bocholt, little town in Belgium And I started a vw club with some friends called Aircooled Junkies.
It is a 1973 (1300s) bug, originally delivered to Belgium. I bought it in 2010 from a guy who started restoring it but didn’t have the time to finish it. I only had to reassemble the car as it was already painted.
The bug was legally drivable since June 2012. I drove it for 3 years as my daily. In the summer of 2015 I registered it as an ‘oldtimer’ and installed a 4” narrowed beam with airride in the front. I kept changing / trying different parts and now i’m driving it with adjustable spring-plates in the back. Fuchs wheels (4,5j front 5,5j back). There’s a custom interior and a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel.
I don’t know how to describe the look of the car. I made it how I think a late model should look like!
Well, we love it – thanks for sharing Nils!
